FACT - Finance, Accounting, Controlling, Taxation & Law (M.A.)

Overview

The master's degree programme FACT - Finance, Accounting, Controlling, Taxation & Law (M.A.) complements the Business Studies bachelor's degree programme and extends it whilst focusing on the named areas. At the same time, the programme provides interesting interfaces for graduates of technical or natural science bachelor's degree programmes who are looking for a complementary Business Studies qualification with this profile, in the sense of classical MBA programmes.

The three or four-semester programme variants offered, with accompanying learning agreements, provide individual possibilities for studying that take into account these widely varying starting points in the best possible way.

The degree programme places great value on well-founded specialist theory as well as practice-orientated studies in the named areas of focus and networks these with each other. In addition, key competences in relation to teamwork, communication and decision-making ability are supported through accompanying projects and simulation exercises based on complex problem-solving.

Modules

1st SEMESTER

Introductory semester

The introductory semester, which is only included in the four-semester programme, serves to align varying study conditions and initial qualifications. In addition to introductory courses in the areas:

  • Innovative Controlling Developments
  • Compliance
  • Auditing and Company Evaluation

More advanced modules from the FACT profile of the bachelor's degree programme of the University are integrated (base modules). The preconditions for the successful continuation of participation in the degree programme are defined individually in a so-called learning agreement.

2nd SEMESTER

Specialist theory and key competences, (first semester in the three-semester variant)

Training of specialist theory begins in this semester and includes the following three modules:

  • Value-Orientated Business Management
  • Selected Problems in International Accounting
  • Financial and Risk Management.

These core modules are complemented by a company simulation exercise and a practice-orientated analysis and evaluation project. These include complex problems and are characterised by numerous dynamic influencing factors as well as a large degree of freedom in the development of individual solutions and strategies. By working in teams, key skills relating to teamwork ability, communication and the creative application and adaptation of theoretical knowledge are promoted.

3rd SEMESTER

Specialist theory and scientific research

The third semester continues the training in specialist theory and includes three new core modules with the following themes:

  • Cost Management
  • Company and Commercial Law
  • Taxation of Companies Nationally and Internationally

The complete spectrum of specialist content of the degree programme is thereby covered in a two-semester cycle. This is complemented through participation in research projects in this specialist field, which constitutes a primary scientifically orientated component of the study programme.

4th SEMESTER

Master's semester

The final semester is used for preparation of the master's thesis, which can be either theoretical or orientated towards practical applications. This can be combined with a work placement or a period of studying abroad. The results of the master's thesis must be defended in the context of a master's colloquium. An accompanying seminar supports students with the structured and target-orientated treatment of problems.

Career

The degree programme prepares graduates to work in positions across the entire spectrum of finance and accounting in all industries. These tasks are generally closely interconnected with questions of corporate and fiscal law. The master's degree program FACT thereby provides a comprehensive portfolio of knowledge and abilities covering the entire range of classical "commercial leadership". In practice in companies these fields of activity, which are indispensable for business success, are often concentrated centrally or in special departments. These are typically areas or departments with names such as:

  • Controlling /Managerial Accounting
  • Bookkeeping / Business Accounting
  • Annual Report
  • Finance / Treasury
  • Compliance / Law / Auditing / Risk Management
  • Taxation

Most of these areas of activity can also be found in NPOs or in the context of public administration. In addition, a wide range of service and consultancy companies concentrate on these fields, for example auditors, accountancy firms and business consultancies. In total, graduates have excellent initial and long-term career prospects as highly qualified new personnel in this multifaceted and industry-independent field of activity are almost always in demand. In contrast to many other areas this is even the case during economically challenging times or crisis situations.
