Harz University of Applied Sciences: Orientation Days and Welcome Ceremony for First-Year Students

Winter semester starts in Wernigerode and Halberstadt

The official kick-off for the current winter semester took place in mid-September 2025 with the Ceremonial Enrolment at the Faculty of Automation and Computer Science, the Faculty of Administrative Sciences, and the Faculty of Business Studies. Harz University of Applied Sciences welcomes 694 first-year students, which corresponds roughly to last year’s figure, when an increase of around 15 percent was recorded. In total, nearly 3,000 students are enrolled in Wernigerode or Halberstadt, many of them in part-time or dual study programmes. In addition to German students, over 250 students from more than 20 countries enhance the university's international atmosphere. This includes students participating in exchange programs between Harz University of Applied Sciences and its numerous partner universities worldwide.

The President, Prof. Dr. Folker Roland. warmly welcomed the newcomers: “You are studying at a university that is both practice-oriented and internationally oriented in many respects, while at the same time being closely connected to the region. During the recent Orientation Days, you have already got to know not only our beautiful campus, but also the Harz Mountains and everything that characterises them – and perhaps, for example during the traditional Brocken hike, you have already grown fond of them,”. The university ‘s head invited the new students to get actively involved: “Collaboration and student engagement are part of our DNA. Through our many student associations, you can help shape campus life, develop personally, and find friends for life.”

For around two-thirds of the newly enrolled students, the campus familiarisation began in advance with the Orientation Days. In addition to preparatory courses and information on the individual degree programmes, the new students were introduced to all university services, the campus management software, the library system, and the extensive range of language courses. The settling-in period is even more extensive for exchange students, who, during the Welcome Days, receive guidance on living and studying in Germany. They are supported throughout this process by their buddies, German students who assist them in getting acclimated to campus life.

First friendships were made during joint events on campus. And the traditional hike up the Brocken, the region’s most famous mountain, once again proved to be a highlight.
