Data Science (M.Sc.)

First intake: winter semester 2021/22

Language of instruction: German

Standard period of study: 3 semesters

Making data-based decisions

What is Data Science?

Data science draws insights from data. Recommendations for action can be derived from the findings and ultimately decisions can be made. To this end, data science is increasingly drawing on the related fields of artificial intelligence, machine learning and deep learning.

Data Science at Harz University of Applied Sciences

In the Master's programme in Data Science at Harz University of Applied Sciences, you will focus either on data-based challenges in the field of finance and insurance or in Industry 4.0. We will train you to derive, optimise and automate data-driven decisions for a company. You will learn how to incorporate ethical and legal principles. Establishing data science in a company can entail major process changes. In order to be able to accompany these changes in a structured manner, you will also learn change management.

Who can study Data Science?

With a pure or interdisciplinary degree in computer science, mathematics, physics or statistics, you are well prepared for the requirements of the Master's programme in Data Science. But a technical degree, a business studies or economics degree also qualifies you for this. You can make up for missing basics in computer science, mathematics or statistics individually. We will arrange learning agreements with you for this purpose.

How is the programme structured?

The programme lasts three semesters. You can start either in the summer semester or in the winter semester, as the programme has a modular structure. You can choose between the specialisations "Insurance and Financial Management" and "Industry 4.0".

In theory modules, we teach you about mathematical methods, machine learning, deep learning, ethics and data protection, scientific project management and change management. You can apply this knowledge practically in the analysis of financial and technical data, in the research and practical project and in the master's thesis. Laboratory facilities with state-of-the-art software are available to you for the practical modules. You will also learn to write software yourself.

The Harz University of Applied Sciences is regionally and internationally networked. You can combine projects at home and abroad with the Master's thesis as well as semesters abroad.

What can I do professionally after the Data Science degree?

Depending on your choice of specialisation, you will qualify as a specialist and manager in the insurance and financial sector or in the technology industry. A university career is also open to you, as you learn to plan, implement and present scientific projects during your studies.
