Shaping university: “My Studies – My Campus”

Cooperating to create a model for instruction

What ideas and suggestions do students have with regard to instruction at Harz University of Applied Sciences? What does a lively and liveable campus look like? What opportunities for involvement do they want to see? University management held interactive events at both campuses this summer in cooperation with the Student Union under the name “My Studies – My Campus”. Accompanied by the relaxed tunes of the student initiative “Musikfreunde” as well as barbecuing and “coffee to stay”, the comfortable atmosphere around the grill in Wernigerode and in the picturesque Halberstädter Innenhof provided the perfect opportunity to get together with professors and share ideas.

“Around one and a half years ago, our university decided to create a model for instruction through a participative process,” explains Dr Louisa Klemmer. “It’s important to us that we get as many stakeholders and voices at our university on board with this process and create a model that everybody plays a part in creating,” the Vice President for Academic and International Affairs goes on to say. “We are aware that such a process takes time, but the journey itself is part of the destination.”

Participants had the chance to get involved on site and digitally – even anonymously if they so decided. There were many answers to the question of the important aspects of university instruction, such as, “Learning real-life information. Not just technical information, but things that strengthen you as a person and create more confidence.” The desire was expressed for much more practical experience, but also for a variety of perspectives. One student wrote, “It is also very important to have different personalities from diverse backgrounds to discuss in groups and develop a thinker mindset.”

“All suggestions and ideas go toward the creation of an instructional model. The event ‘My Studies – My Campus’ was a complete success and showed how important it is to work together toward making the university a place of learning, communication and growth,” says Louisa Klemmer. One participant in the digital survey wrote that the active campus life at Harz University of Applied Sciences sets it apart from other such universities. Klemmer agrees: “The work and dedication shown by our student initiatives are of enormous importance for our university – they make up our DNA and Harz University of Applied Sciences. I’m very grateful to everybody who gets active in this way.”
