Technology and Innovation Management (M.Eng.) - German track

Language of instruction: German

Standard period of study: 3 or 4 semesters

Overview

Current environment

The global competition for the development of new technologies is steadily becoming more intensive. In addition, the increasing interactions between classical engineering and information technologies are enabling ever-shorter product lifecycles. In this context, the ability to recognise innovations quickly, to react to these changes and to implement new technologies efficiently is becoming crucial for success.

Orientation of the degree programme

In the master's degree programme Technological Innovation Management (M.Eng.), your business, engineering and IT management skills will be developed further, with a focus on technical innovations. The continuous and target-orientated search for new technological innovations as well as analysing, evaluating, controlling, implementing and introducing them taking business perspectives into account form core areas of technological innovation management.

Structure of the programme

By linking various specialist fields, the programme will provide you with skills that are required both in expert roles at interfaces within companies and in management positions. The planning, implementation and presentation of your own projects using modern laboratory facilities will also develop your scientific competences to enable you to pursue further scientific qualifications. The course of studies improves your skill-set in one or more fields of innovation through the work on projects, the selection of business studies modules and the master's thesis.

Period of studies and graduation

The regular period of studies covers 3 or 4 semesters, depending on your previous qualifications. Upon graduation you will be awarded the degree of Master of Engineering (M.Eng.).

Requirements for joining the programme

The prerequisite for admittance to the degree programme Technological Innovation Management is a completed degree in either Business Administration and Engineering, Business Informatics, Computer Science and Business or Technical Business Administration from a university or cooperative education institute. For students who have earned at least 180 ECTS credits in a bachelor's or diploma degree the regular period of studies is four semesters. Students with 210 ECTS credits from a bachelor's or diploma degree need to study for three semesters.

Learning agreement

The decision to study for a master's degree is based on individual goals. That is why we invite you to a personal application interview to discuss your motivations and objectives. Together we will formulate your study goals for the master's programme in a learning agreement and decide on implementation strategies for successful studies.

Mentoring by experienced practitioners

Our teaching staff will support you intensively. You may also choose to make use of mentoring provided by experienced practitioners from the business advisory committees. With Harz University of Applied Sciences' international network, it is even possible to conduct your project abroad.

Modules

1st SEMESTER

(four-semester degree programme)

This semester consists of various compulsory elective modules based on the learning agreement to fulfil the requirements for the master's programme for students with a bachelor's degree with 180 credit points or who lack qualifications.

2nd SEMESTER

(first semester of three-semester degree programme)

In the second semester, the fundamentals of innovation management are acquired from both a business and a technical perspective.

Innovation management from a business perspective:

  • Strategic Innovation Management (strategic planning processes, innovation management)
  • Implementing Decisions (change management, monitoring systems to achieve goals)

Innovation management from a technical perspective:

  • Fields of Technological Innovation
  • Operations Research
  • Agile Requirements Engineering
  • Information Retrieval Technologies

3rd SEMESTER

To improve your management competences in innovation processes you select two modules from the list of elective modules in the field of business administration, for example:

  • Leadership
  • Market and Consumer-Orientated Innovation Management
  • Business Simulation
  • Moderation

The safety and security of systems are decisive factors in innovation processes. The issues are examined from both a technical and an IT perspective.

  • Functional Safety
  • IT Security
  • IT Controlling

You will work on a research and development project that fits your personal profile. You will methodically acquire knowledge of scientific project management over the course of this project.

  • Research and development project
  • Scientific project management

4th SEMESTER

Your master's thesis enables you to apply the skills you have acquired in the field of innovation management to a theme specific to your personal profile. The thesis can be developed in conjunction with a company, as the basis for a company start-up or together with a research institute. During the five months of working on the master's thesis you will receive intensive support from the teaching staff and will have access to Harz University of Applied Sciences' modern laboratories for renewable energy, automation and informatics.

The master's programme is completed by the master's colloquium.

Career

Specialists in individual company departments as well as management staff are expected to possess competences in innovation management. Graduates can operate in key positions of responsibility where both management skills and knowledge of technological innovations and information technologies are needed. This enables them to support the innovation and change processes of their departments through business process analysis and process optimisation. In addition, the master's degree programme provides students with the foundations for successful entrepreneurship.

Possible areas of activity of our graduates:

  • Research and development
  • Innovation and technology management
  • Product and production planning, process management
  • Technical marketing/sales
  • Technical change management
  • Logistics management
