Language proficiency requirements for master's programmes

If you are applying for a master's programme, you may need to provide proof of your language proficiency. Here you can find out which certificates we accept.

Please note that the required language proficiency levels may vary depending on the programme. For details, please refer to the admission regulations for the respective programme.

English

Proof of English language proficiency is not required if English is your native language or if you have a master's degree from one of the following countries:

  • Australia
  • United Kingdom
  • Ireland
  • Canada (except Quebec and New Brunswick)
  • New Zealand
  • United States

If the above conditions are not met, English language proficiency must be demonstrated by means of recognized language certificates.
It is possible to demonstrate language proficiency at level B1 by means of university documents. 

Documents from universities (only B1)

The completed and successfully passed English language level B1  must be clearly evident from the following documents from your previous studies:

  •     Certificate / Diploma Supplement
  •     Module handbook / Module description

Proof of language proficiency at level B1 is generally required for master's programmes taught in German.

German as a foreign language

Proof of German language proficiency is not required if German is your native language or if you obtained your master's degree admission qualification in a German-language bachelor's programme in Germany.
Alternatively, language proficiency must be demonstrated by one of the following recognized language certificates.

The following language certificates are accepted as proof of German language proficiency.

Test DaF (Test Deutsch als Fremdsprache) at least 14 points, with no score below TDN 3 in any skill
The German Language Diploma of the Standing Conference of the Ministers of Education and Cultural Affairs Level 2 (DSD II)
Goethe Certificate C2

Certificate of the Austrian Language Diploma (ÖSD) C2
Successful completion of the assessment test with a pass in the German section of a preparatory college
