Most of our exchange students arrive here with little to no knowledge of German. Since you can study in English that is no problem academically.
However, we strongly recommend learning German as a Foreign Language as it will be extremely helpful for your stay. Our area is rather rural and not all people speak English. Learning some basic German will ease your daily life a lot!
There are several great ways to learn German that we would like to present to you here.
To allow our exchange students to fully dive into the German language right from the beginning we have established a preparatory intensive German language course. It is designed for complete beginners. It will take place during the orientation days for exchange students. The week consists of around 30 teaching units and will be enriched by cultural excursions in and around Wernigerode.
The course will help you to
The course is strongly recommended and free of charge.
In addition to the course programme exchange students can take language courses in German that range from beginner level to advanced preparation courses for TestDaF. During the orientation days you will attend a German placement test to know which German course you should attend.
More information about German for university and everyday life you will find here.
A few impressions of our former participants:
"The classes were very interactive and also kept me interested and motivated. Personally, I did not find anything to improve or change. It takes a lot of effort to deliver such a great time during the class."
"This intensive course for German language has definitely helped me focus on learning German in terms of listening and speaking and increased my confidence. It provided me with valuable information about the basic grammar rules, vocabulary and sentence creation. It boosted my confidence to start speaking conversational German. I think the course has been a valuable learning experience."
