Repair Café Wernigerode

Third Mission

The idea to host a Repair Café in Wernigerode emerged during a meeting of the "Sustainable Harz University" working group. The Repair Café is a series of events where visitors can repair their broken household and leisure devices together with volunteer helpers. This initiative fosters knowledge growth and self-efficacy among all participants. It lowers the threshold for attempting self-repairs and prevents premature disposal. In addition, it promotes an appreciation for devices and presents an alternative to the throwaway culture. Without competing with local service businesses, it spreads technical skills among the populace and helps prevent resource wastage and environmental impact from unnecessary disposal.

The first two events were held on May 28 and July 9, 2016, in the student lounge "Malzmühle." Since the third Repair Café on September 24, 2016, there has been a collaboration with the Oskar Kämmer School in Wernigerode, which regularly provides their cafeteria, Oscar's.

On June 14, 2018, the Sustainable Harz University working group received the Environmental Award of Saxony-Anhalt for this project. At the end of 2016, the project was handed over to the city and has since been continued by volunteer citizens. In 2018, these volunteers received the Environmental Award of the city of Wernigerode.

Volunteers are always welcome!!!!
