From the start of October, the new StadtCampus on Westernstraße will become a hub for exchange, collaboration and innovative ideas right in the heart of Wernigerode’s city centre. In a partnership between Harz University of Applied Sciences and the City of Wernigerode, event and workspaces are being created here to bring students and the wider community together.

The StadtCampus is intended to be more than just an additional workspace: under the slogan ‘Work. Network. Envision the future.’, a central meeting place is taking shape where different stakeholders can come together, develop joint projects and forge new connections. The ‘Gründerwald’, the Harz University of Applied Sciences’ network for start-up initiatives and young businesses, will also find a permanent home here.

With the StadtCampus, Harz University of Applied Sciences and the town of Wernigerode are pursuing the shared aim of integrating the university into the life of the town and making the town centre more visible to students. The new location offers students the opportunity to work away from the main campus, exchange ideas and develop their own concepts. At the same time, businesses and the city’s economic development agency are set to engage more closely with students, thereby creating new opportunities for work placements, collaborations, final-year projects and start-up ventures.

“We want to connect the university with the town centre. Students should not only experience Wernigerode as a university town in Hasserode, but also get to know the town centre and the other neighbourhoods as places to work, network and develop their own ideas,” said Mayor Tobias Kascha.

The StadtCampus is also intended to become a place for the people of Wernigerode to meet, exchange ideas and network. Workshops, events and other initiatives are designed to help bring young people into contact with the university, the regional economy and topics relating to start-ups and entrepreneurship at an early stage.

Kristin Dormann, Head of Economic Development for the City of Wernigerode, sees this as a major opportunity for the town centre: “I have always hoped that a place like this for meeting and networking would be established on Westernstraße. From the Economic Development Department’s perspective, the StadtCampus is a real asset for the town centre: it will bring extra footfall to Westernstraße, create new links between students, businesses and those interested in starting a business, and thus also open up new economic opportunities.”

The StadtCampus is scheduled to open on 1 October 2026. Until then, final preparations are underway for the new premises on Westernstraße. Prof. Dr Folker Roland, Rector of Harz University of Applied Sciences, emphasises: “The StadtCampus will be a new building block for a vibrant Westernstraße and an even closer link between the university, students, the business community and the wider city.”
