The UN Sustainable Development Goals are always the overarching theme of the Transatlantic Summer School and serve as the foundation for a specific topic chosen by the hosting University.
The Summer School is a collaboration between Harz University of Applied Sciences, Ruhr West University of Applied Sciences, Wayne State University, and Iowa State University and takes place for the fourth time. 2026 is the host Wayne State University
The program includes an online preparation phase and two weeks on site in Detroit. Students work in international teams and collaborate with local organizations on hands-on sustainability projects. Through this work, they develop skills in project-based learning, intercultural teamwork, community engagement, and global sustainability perspectives.
Detroit offers a unique learning environment. Known for its industrial history, vibrant cultural scene, and ongoing revitalization, the city allows students to explore urban sustainability from many perspectives. Guided tours, site visits, and cultural activities help participants discover the city’s complexities and understand the social, environmental, and economic issues shaping Detroit today.
Participants engage with community partners involved in areas such as urban agriculture, renewable energy, green infrastructure, sustainable mobility, neighborhood development, and environmental justice. Workshops, expert lectures, and networking opportunities with professionals and community leaders enrich the academic experience, while social activities foster meaningful international connections.
For HS Harz students, this program offers an unforgettable opportunity to gain practical experience, and become part of an international community working toward a more sustainable Detroit.
