Two German and two US universities are inviting students to take part in online modules and two on-campus weeks at Harz University of Applied Sciences as part of a summer school. The aim of the summer school will be to develop new solutions for innovative energy use in a design thinking process - from smart city to smart hotel, from micro-mobility to smart grid, from social entrepreneurship to social marketing.
Who can take part?
The partners of the transatlantic summer school are Iowa State University, Wayne State University, Ruhr West University of Applied Sciences and Harz University of Applied Sciences. The program is open to students from all degree programs at Harz University of Applied Sciences and the partner universities. Interdisciplinary cooperation is explicitly encouraged.
What is it about?
Future and sustainable energy concepts and their integration into the everyday lives of citizens are currently much-discussed topics that are important across all areas of society and are also geopolitically significant. As part of the Summer School, the participating students from all partner universities will get to know new perspectives on the transformation of the energy supply and work together to develop new innovative solutions. They will be supported by teachers and trainers with experience in the design thinking process.
The Summer School enables students from Germany and the USA to deepen their understanding of global challenges in the context of the UN Sustainable Development Goals in various scientific fields. The Summer School's innovative teaching and learning program offers a new approach to sustainability as it is interdisciplinary, transatlantic, project-oriented and promotes future skills.
By participating in the Summer School, students receive 5 credit points, which can be submitted for recognition in suitable courses. This process is supported by the Summer School team.
How does the Summer School work?
The Summer School is divided into online modules and an attendance phase at the Wernigerode campus of the Harz University of Applied Sciences. The online modules are offered both synchronously and asynchronously in the period from the end of May to June 2023. The two-week face-to-face phase will take place from July 24 to August 4, 2023.
„It is so important to be open and communicate with new people in the future, especially in English when going international and building a network. That was a big part in the Summer School and a good preparation.“ [Jan-Peter Hansen]
„It is always scary thought if we think world will be saved by others. But for the first time I am proud that in 2 weeks I dedicated myself to study and explore more about sustainaibility and I am grateful that I worked on it." [Anjali Wankhede]
